Happy 4th!
Posted June 30, 2013, 9:38 AM ET

Most Americans will be celebrating a little time off this week, since America's birthday falls on a Thursday.....but some of us will be working all week.

I'd rather be on the air doing the radio shows and TV commentaries than fighting the nightmares of the Carolina coast....so I've allowed my wife and girls to brave the South Carolina shores. Surprisingly, they couldn't wait to get down there and do their thing without me.

As soon as the car pulled out of the driveway, I lowered the AC into the 60''s and everybody was happy....including my dog, Chester. I considered this a win-win scenario.

As we finally get into July, I can start to see and smell football....and that's a good thing.

In two weeks, I head down to Birmingham, Alabama for the circus known as SEC Media Days....and there's nowhere else I'd rather be at that time of July because it means the real season is right around the corner.

The ACC has their version soon afterwards, and it's followed up by all the power conferences....it finishes up when I head out to LA for the PAC-12 Media Day on July 26th.

Then it's time to report to camp, and we're hitting the road traveling around the country broadcasting from all the big-time schools on our SiriusXM Camp Tours.

I can't wait.....I thought May & June would never end.

I'm sure Roger Goodell thought the same thing last week, when he saw two of his NFL players get arrested for separate attempted murders.....stay classy, NFL.

It was not one of the NFL's better weeks. For the life of me, I can't even fathom what was going through Aaron Hernandez' thick skull....what an incredible story.

Nobody seems to be immune to stupid....

I read about the Vanderbilt sex crime story....and speaking of dumb...how about the arrest of the vandalism to Clemson's Howard's Rock?

Turns out some 18-year-old punk drove his dad's truck which proudly showcased his Clemson allegiance to do the damage. Supposedly the kid is a Clemson fan.....and I thought Harvey Updyke, Jr. was stupid?

Maybe the kid thought he'd get dad a cool Father's Day gift?

For punishment, they should let him stand at the bottom of the hill before the Tigers rub whatever is left of the rock and charge onto the field before the Georgia season opener. Whatever physical punishment he absorbs, he will have earned it.

Either way, we are less than 60 days from the start of the 2013 college football season.

The 100th edition of the Tour de France got underway with a spectacular ending in Stage 1.....

A giant bus slammed into the banners and stage that overhangs the finish line and got stuck.

There hasn't been any confirmation that Danica Patrick was driving the bus.

To make matters worse, prior to the race, Lance Armstrong only made life harder on himself by declaring that "it was impossible to win the Tour de France without doping".

Apparently Lance continues to have a tough time remembering all his lies....he has become a complete and total disgrace.

Speaking of Danica.....she was #91 on the list of most powerful celebrities in the world.

Wow, not bad for the lady that was 27th in the Cup standings heading into Kentucky.

It seems as if Kyle Petty wasn't impressed by the Forbes list. He made the statement on TV that she was a marketing machine, and was not a race car driver. Petty's exact words were, "She can go fast, but she can't race. She's come a long way, but she's still not a race car driver and I don't think she's ever going to be a race car driver."

Truth hurts.

Of course, Dale, Jr. came to her rescue....I guess those Nationwide commercials brought the two closer together. He should be thrilled that he doesn't have to repair her wrecked Nationwide series car every week.

Danica had a great retort to Petty's comment....Darrell Waltrip's crush said, "Anyone who has watched what I do knows that I'm crap in qualifying. In the race, things go much better."

Sure they do, Danica.....whatever you and Junior say.

Wink, wink.

One of the most ridiculous comments of the week has to go to NY Yankees President, Randy Levine.

After announcing that beautiful Yankee Stadium will be hosting the "Pinstripe Bowl" for the next handful of years....the Yanks Prez decided to pull rank.

Levine chimed in and stated that "Yankee Stadium will be as good as any venue there is to host a college football semi-final or national championship game."

That's hilarious.

Listen, I'm all for Yankee Stadium to host the Pinstripe Bowl between the Big 10's seventh place team and the 8th place team from the ACC.....there's nothing better than a Syracuse-Minnesota game in the Bronx in late December.

But if you think for one NY second, that Yankee Stadium is in the hunt to host Bama against whatever poor soul wants a piece of them for the national title, then you're crazy.

Can you imagine the good ol' boys of the SEC rolling into NYC in early January.....snow tires on the RV's.....smokers in the subways....parkas instead of sundresses on the eye candy?

Forget-about-it.

It's truly one of the dumbest statements of 2013.

Perhaps the Yankees should concentrate on playing October baseball in Yankee Stadium instead of college football in the Fall or Winter.....just a thought.

This has been a lousy two months of baseball for my beloved San Francisco Giants.

Since May 13th, the defending World Series Champs have the worst record in baseball.

It has been painful to watch...it's so bad that the LA Dodgers could finally pass us in the standings this week.....and we all know how bad they suck.

It's a long year in MLB....ups and downs.....but my guys better do something soon or the chances of making it to the post-season are over.

Finally, when you're watching the fireworks this July 4th, remember former NBA star Gilbert Arenas.

He was arrested in LA last week with over 100 pounds of illegal fireworks in the back of his pick-up truck. There were so many fireworks that the LAPD Bomb Squad had to be called out to remove them from his truck.

Nice job, Gilbert.

Happy Birthday, USA.
