Grab A Tiger By The Tail

Y.E. Yang?

Now, that will be the answer to a trivia question for generations to come.

Tiger Woods finally lost a major that he appeared to have in his palm from day one. For the first time in his career, he lost a lead heading into the final round of a major tournament.

Make it 14 of 15, Tiger.

It was strange to watch Tiger look like anybody else with a putter in his hand during the final round at Hazeltine. The guy couldn't make a putt if his life depended on it. In the meantime, Y.E. Yang was the man.

He becomes the first Asian-born man to win a major title, and certainly the first guy to ever win a major while wearing a rooster on the back of his golf shirt.

I would have expected Phil, Lee Westwood, Geoff Ogilvy, Paddy Harrington or somebody of this stature to finally catch the mighty Tiger Woods on the final round of a major....but not Y.E.Yang. This makes the second trip to Hazeltine in which Tiger comes away shocked by the outcome. In 2002, Rich Beem played out of his mind for the win, and now Y.E. Yang.

Who is this guy?

When you consider the four winners of this year's majors are Angel Cabrerra, Lucas Glover, Stewart Cink and Y.E.Yang....man, what can you say? Tiger goes winless in the majors for the first time since 2004, and we're all left wondering what's going on in the world of golf?

As the golf world reacts, the folks in Greensboro get ready to host the PGA Tour this week. I look forward to going to Sedgefield on Friday for our radio show.

The Carolina Panthers make their pre-season debut on Monday night against the New York Giants.

I'm sensing that I'll be able to spend about 20 minutes watching before falling asleep, or becoming completely disinterested. I just can't get into the battles for the back-up left guard.

I will tell you that I was very impressed with the team when we visited Spartanburg last week, for our radio show. The team, especially the defensive players, are pumped about the new philosophy being established by Ron Meeks.

The "search and destroy" attitude has become infectious, and you can tell the guys are loving it. It is very apparent that the team is confident and the vibe is very positive.

The key of course is to stay healthy, and the Panthers like many other teams have been bitten by the injury bug. The loss of Kemo at DT is huge, no pun intended. I'm not sold that they have an answer for that replacement currently in camp.

But Thomas Davis, Jon Beason, DeAngelo Williams , Steve Smith and Jonathan Stewart have all missed days so far. That trend needs to end ASAP.

I think the Panthers are going to be good, if they can get the starters on the field.....I'm not sold that they will sniff the 12-4 mark from a year ago, but they should be a major factor in the NFC South and therefore be in the playoff hunt.

How bad is it in Michigan?

Brian Vickers just parked his Toyota in Victory Lane.

Last week, I heard one of the dumbest comments ever muttered on the radio by a supposed "guy in the know".

On my way back from Panthers camp last Thursday evening, I happened to be listening to the NFL channel on Sirius satellite radio. The host was playing an interview with ESPN's Mark Schlereth and they played his comments on Michael Vick.

The Guiding Light star and resident HYPE blowhard claimed that he wasn't surprised at all that Vick had not been signed, and stated that it was a given that you could eliminate any team with an established QB already in place.

He even went as far to say that before any team would sign Vick, they would go as far to ask the players' wives, the coaches' wives, the owners' wives if Vick would be a good fit.

Schlereth was quite confident that he was speaking as a guy that knows his NFL football and the mind-set that exists in the league about a guy like Michael Vick.

Imagine my surprise when I arrived back to Charlotte to find out that Vick signed a new deal with the Philadelphia Eagles. Geez, I wonder if Donovan McNabb is considered an established quarterback in the NFL?

Evidently, all the players' wives must have agreed to the deal.

I could have sworn that Schlereth was the same guy that stated that after watching film, he notices that Julius Peppers' motor never stops.

Stick to the role-playing, Mark.

Do you know who was the happiest man in America, when Vick signed with the Eagles?

Rick Pitino.

How quickly did Slick Rick disappear from the sports radar screen?
